Sign-up Sheets Using The Choice Activity

Here is how you would use the Choice Activity as a “Sign-up sheet”:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the Turn editing on button (view image).
  3. Click on the Add an activity or resource link (view image) in the appropriate week or topic, select Choice under ACTIVITIES (view image), then click on the Add button.
  4. Type in a Choice name (this is the link the students will click on – e.g. Sign-up sheet).
  5. Description is where you enter your instructions (e.g. Please select your preferred time).
  6. Display mode for the options allows you to display your choices either horizontally or vertically.
  7. Under the Options (view image) section:
    • Allow choice to be updated (view image), when set to Yes, allows students to switch from one choice to another available choice rather than being forced to stick with their initial choice.
    • Allow more than one choice to be selected (view image) allows you to limit whether or not students can only select one option.
    • Limit the number of responses allowed (view image) gives you the option to set how many students can select each option individually.
    • For each Option listed (Option 1, Option 2, etc.) (view image), enter the text you want to be displayed (e.g. 1:00 PM), and set the Limit (Limit 1, Limit 2, etc.) to the appropriate number (i.e. the number of students who can select that option).
    • If you need more than 5 options, click on the Add 3 fields to form button (view image) as many times as needed.
  8. Under the Availability section (view image), Allow responses from and Allow responses until, when enabled, lets you set a window for when choices can be made.
  9. Under the Results section:
    • Publish results (view image) determines when students can see what options have been chosen, if at all.
    • Privacy of results (view image) allows you to determine if students can see who has selected which option(s) if you have elected to Publish results. Allowing students to see who has chosen which option(s) can make it easy for them to swap with others.
    • Show column for unanswered (view image), when set to Yes, will show a list of students who have not yet made a selection. This list is visible to both the teacher and students only if the Privacy of results option is set to Publish full results, showing names and other choices (view image).
    • Include responses from inactive/suspended users can generally be ignored.
  10. Save your work (view image).
