Why Can't I See My Course In ACORN?
  1. Log into ACORN. You will be redirected to your Dashboard.
  2. The default Course overview will show you (1) In progress courses. If the term hasn't started yet, you will find your up-coming courses by selecting (2) Future from the dropdown. Once the Monday of the first week of classes comes, they will move to (1) In progress. After the term finishes (generally January 1st and May 1st) courses will move to (3) Past (view image).

If you still can't see a course after following these steps, please talk to your department. They can confirm whether or not they have informed the Registrar's Office that you are teaching the course and if all the paperwork has bee taken care of. The Registrar's Office has to manually enter your information into their system. Updates to courses in ACORN happen twice a day, so ACORN can be half a day behind in that regard.

Making A Course Visible

By default, students can’t see their courses in ACORN until you make them "Visible" (they won't see them at all). This gives you a chance to set them up in advance. Here are the steps to make your course(s) "Visible" to your students:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon and select Edit settings (view image).
  3. In the General section at the top, you will see an option called Course visibility. Change the drop-down selection from Hide to Show, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the Save and display (view image) button. If students are still unable to see the course, have them log out of and back into ACORN.

Now that your course has been made "Visible", students will see it listed in the COURSE OVERVIEW section of their Dashboard under In progress (1). If the course has not started yet but is "Visible", it will show up under Future (2). Courses that have ended will show up under Past (3). All "Visible" courses can be viewed by selecting All (except removed from view) (4) (view image).

Topic Outline vs Weekly Outline

The default setup for a new course uses the Weekly outline. This gives you one block in the centre section of the main course page for each week of the course starting at the Monday of the first week and generally going until the end of the exam period.

If you prefer to present your course materials in more of a topical format you can change the setup of the centre section to the Topic outline. This allows you more flexibility in how you organise your resources and activities. Just follow these instructions to make the change:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon and select Edit settings (view image).
  3. In the Course format section (scroll down a bit and click to expand) you will see an option called Format (view image). Simply change the selection from Weekly format to Topics format (The page will refresh).
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Save changes button.
Adding Topic/Week Sections To Your Course

You may need to add more Topics (or Weeks) to your course. Here's how:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon and select Turn editing on (view image).
  3. Click on the + Add topics (or Weeks) link (view image).
  4. Enter the Number of sections you wish to add and click on the Add topics (weeks) button (view image).

You should now see the added Topics/Weeks sections in your course.

Deleting Topic/Week Sections From Your Course

You may need to add more Topics (or Weeks)to your course. Here's how:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon and select Turn editing on (view image).
  3. Click on the Edit caret dropdown list and select trash can Delete topic (week) (view image).

If you have deleted a section other than the last one, the automagic Topic/Week names will adjust themselves to compensate for the missing section.

Course Dates

Courses now have specific start and end dates set. On the Course start date, courses will be moved to the In progress tab (view image) from the Future tab in your COURSE OVERVIEW. On the Course end date (view image), courses will be moved from the In progress tab to the Past tab (view image) in your COURSE OVERVIEW. The default dates are set up as follows and should not be changed:

  • Fall -> the Monday of the first week of classes in September to December 31st
  • Winter -> the Monday of the first week of classes in January to April 30th
  • Full Year -> the Monday of the first week of classes in September to April 30th
  • Spring/Summer/Intersession courses will be slightly different each year and should have the appropriate dates attached
