Making A Course Visible

By default, students can’t see their courses in ACORN until you make them "Visible" (they won't see them at all). This gives you a chance to set them up in advance. Here are the steps to make your course(s) "Visible" to your students:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon (view image) and select Edit settings (view image).
  3. In the General section at the top you will see an option called Course visibility (view image).
  4. Change the drop-down option from Hide to Show.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Save and display (view image) button. If students are still unable to see the course, have them log out of and back into ACORN.

Now that your course has been made "Visible", students will see it listed in the COURSE OVERVIEW section of their Dashboard under the In progress tab (view image).

Topic Outline vs Weekly Outline

The default setup for a new course uses the Weekly outline. This gives you one block in the centre section of the main course page for each week of the course starting at the Monday of the first week and generally going until the end of the exam period.

If you prefer to present your course materials in more of a topical format you can change the setup of the centre section to the Topic outline. This allows you more flexibility in how you organise your resources and activities. Just follow these instructions to make the change:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon (view image) and select Edit settings (view image).
  3. In the Course format section (scroll down a bit and click to expand) you will see an option called Format (view image). Simply change the selection from Weekly format to Topics format (The page will refresh).
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Save changes button.
Adding Week/Topic Sections To Your Course

You may need to add Weeks or Topics sections to your course. Here's how:

  1. Log into ACORN and enter your course.
  2. Near the top right corner of the window, click on the gear icon (view image) and select Turn editing on (view image).
  3. Click on the + Add Weeks (view image) link.
  4. Enter the Number of sections (view image) you wish to add and click on the Add weeks (view image) button.

You should now see the added Week/Topics sections in your course.

Course Dates

Courses now have specific start and end dates set. On the Course end date, courses will be moved to the In progress tab (view image) from the Future tab in your COURSE OVERVIEW. On the Course end date (view image), courses will be moved from the In progress tab (view image) to the Past tab (view image) in your COURSE OVERVIEW. The default dates are set up as follows and should not be changed:

  • Fall -> the Monday of the first week of classes in September to December 31st
  • Winter -> the Monday of the first week of classes in January to April 30th
  • Full Year -> the Monday of the first week of classes in September to April 30th
  • Spring/Summer/Intersession courses will be slightly different each year and should have the appropriate dates attached
